Syllabus for Canada
The University of the Americas -Puebla
Dr.Paul Rich - August 2001
History of Course: This course was first taught by Dr. Rich with Guillermo De Los Reyes as Teaching Assistant in 1995. In 1996, it was made compulsory for all RI students. This is the third major revision of the syllabus, and it reflects Dr. Rich's trip to Canada in Spring 2001 as recipient of a Canadian Government faculty enrichment award.
Use of Computer: The course requires extensive use of Canadian computer resources and a project of constructing a Canadian website. The premise is that Canada has a fast-moving political and cultural scene which cannot be studied effectively without use of the Web. Every student must join at least one list for Canadian studies, and Dr. Rich asks during the term for reports from each student on the use of those lists. It is expected that there will be visits to the class by Canadian scholars, and possible additional reading in connection with those visits. English: All work is in English. if you are having troubles with English, the University offers free help through its studies center.
Grading. Three tests during term based on the readings. 10 points each. A long final exam for 20 points. Paper at the Congress of the Americas in October about a project based on ample research, which will be placed on a website: 10 points. In other words, the paper will be done for the Congress and it will then be worked up in to a website. 20 points for the first version of the website with your research, 20 points for the completed website. Policy on Plagiarism: Dr. Rich has zero tolerance for cheating in any form. All work must be your own. All material you use from others must have proper citations. If you have any doubt about what plagiarism is, or what constitutes cheating, electronically or otherwise, ask. Remember, zero tolerance.
The course is divided into thematic sections. The lectures presume you are doing the readings. # Hatch mark indicates optional reading.
