The OAS is the oldest regional organization in the United Nations' System. It was established at the First American International Conference in 1948. The OAS has 36 members. In addition, it has given observer status to 27 states of Europa, Asia and Africa and to the Vatican .

The Internship Program includes departments and commissions of the organization, such as the Interamerican Human Rights Commission, the Women's Commission, the Commission for the Abuse of Alcohol and Drugs, the Trade Unit, and the Law Unit.

The assignments are determinated by the OAS' Human Resources department and by the department of Historical Research; the director of this deparment is Dr. Rich's friend, Dr. James Kiernan, who is the person in charge of the selections.

For the internship, a student needs to fill in an application form; this application form includes the basic information about the student, and the reasons for applying to this internship to the OAS.

This program offers an unforgetable experience. The OAS buildings are close to the White House, the World Bank and close to other important buildings of the US goverment.

It's been two years since this program began here at UDLA. This program takes place during all three university semesters, and also can be arranged with other exchange programs that UDLA has with universities in the Washington area.
